Here I am...from a wonderful trip from the Pink City of Jaipur..
Well, I won't be blabbering about the historical facts much here..'cause its all available on 'Google'..as we say, and also its too long and conspicuous at places that you'll probably start to sleep soundly. I must say that Jaipur is one of those cities which are smaller in area and population in view of people like me from metropolitan city like New Delhi, but is efficient in providing all the necessities required by its people in terms of food (availability and seasonal variety), clothing, shelter, heritage, transportation facilities (public and private), communication, etc. I must admit that I was impressed to see the traffic police department and Jaipur police working together in units of 15-20 men in a radius of 1km to keep traffic moving at a brisk pace, though, corrupted behavior of them can be seen here too..!
Above that, the city posses great deal of cultural taste. From those Rajasthani handmade dresses to way of speaking and hospitality and o'course, FOOD.!. The actual 'Pink City' is surrounded by large entry gates, which includes the City Palace (where the Royal family of Jaipur live), Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar (meaning Calculations using Instruments), ancient Govind Dev Temple, and the brilliant marketplace. This area was founded by the Maharaj Sawai Jai Singh II, ruler of Amber in 1727. Apart from these, the Amber Fort, where the kings and queens along with their private helpers and servants used to live, was a treat to the eyes and mind. The fort was divided into many segments like the Diwan-e-aam, Diwan-e-khas, the kings' quarters, the queens' quarters, etc. Another fort was made for the army to live and keep the security intact. The rain water harvesting system of the fort was spread over a stretch of 6km on the hilly terrain and could hold about 3 lac gallons of water.!. They also posses the world's most heavy cannon listed in the Guinness book of world records, which can fire to a distance of about 36km.!. But it was never needed or fired except while a test once.
The Jal Palace is a 5 and half storey palace where the king and queen used to visit during the summers and enjoy hunting from the palace. Cool breeze blows from water to the palace, keeping away the summer heat. Now only 2 storey are above the water and the rest 3 and half beneath water. It has been developed like 'Chowpatty' where people can come and sit, enjoy the breeze, snacks, etc.
After the day's sightseeing, 'ChowkiDhani' is a place you should be at to spend the night. Its kinda renovated wasteland into a cultural experience with all dress-ups, dance shows, puppet show, magic show...and last but not least, the Feast, where you'd be eating in the typical Indian style, blend with the Rajasthani taste in food.
The rest of the city is like usual modern city. Its developing fast and expanding at brisk pace. All in all, it is a place to be, being an Indian, its a must visit.
